2024 Open Forum - Innovations in Graduate Education

2024 Open Forum - Innovations in Graduate Education: Critical Engagement with AI

Continuing to build on prior discussions on Excellence in Graduate Education and Decolonizing academic practices, the 2024 Open Forum seeks to critically examine a spectrum of perspectives on the role, potential, and risks of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is pushing the envelope of current graduate education practices and processes.

The overarching theme of the FGS Open Forum is drawn from the Athabasca University Research Strategic Plan (currently under development) Signature Area #1: Innovations in Education for “Advancing the learner experience and redefining the future of open and distributed education through the development, strategic deployment, and ethical and equitable use of emerging technologies.” The 2023 Generative AI and Graduate and Postdoctoral Research Supervision report by the Western Canadian Deans of Graduate Studies will also inform the 2024 Open Forum in contributing to the current debates with particular relevance for distance learning.

The FGS Open Forum is an annual one-day virtual event that brings together graduate students, faculty members, and other relevant stakeholders and aims to stimulate discussions on key developments affecting graduate education at AU.

This year’s program is proposed to engage the AU community in reflecting on redefining innovations in the graduate education space.
