The Athabasca University Graduate Students’ Association (AUGSA) is a student-run, non-profit organization representing and supporting graduate students at Athabasca University. We advocate for accessible, affordable, and high-quality graduate education by providing services, fostering community, and engaging in university and government relations on behalf of our members.
Position Overview
AUGSA is seeking a collaborative and strategic Executive Director to lead our operations and advance our mission of supporting graduate student success.
This is a full-time (37.5 hours/week) position, typically Monday to Friday, with occasional evening or weekend work for meetings, planning sessions, and events such as the Graduate Student Research Conference.
The role is based in Alberta, with preference for candidates residing in the Athabasca, Calgary, or Edmonton areas. AUGSA operates primarily in a remote work environment, with some in-person meetings and events as required.
Key Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership & Governance
- Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight to ensure AUGSA’s goals and priorities are achieved.
- Support effective governance by advising and assisting the Executive Committee and Council in decision-making, policy development, and strategic planning.
- Serve as the primary staff liaison between AUGSA’s Executive, Council, university administration, and external partners.
Operations & Administration
- Oversee day-to-day operations, programs, and student services.
- Manage contracts, service agreements, and procurement.
- Handle correspondence and ensure effective communication across the organization.
Financial Management
- Oversee financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and CRA filings, in collaboration with the Chair of the Finance Committee and contracted Accountant.
- Ensure sound fiscal management and compliance with all regulatory and not-for-profit requirements.
Human Resources
- Supervise a small team of 2 staff and 2 contractors, including recruitment, training, performance management, and professional development.
- Foster a supportive and collaborative organizational culture.
- Liaise with contracted professionals as needed (Bookkeeping, HR and Legal).
Communications & External Relations
- Coordinate AUGSA communications, marketing, and publications.
- Represent AUGSA in meetings with Athabasca University leadership, other student associations, and government bodies.
- Advocate for graduate student interests and contribute to policy discussions impacting post-secondary education.
Event & Program Management
- Co-chair and organize the annual Athabasca University Graduate Student Research Conference.
- Coordinate graduate student awards and recognition programs.
Qualifications
- Degree in Business Administration, Education Administration, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- Demonstrated experience in student governance, post-secondary education, or non-profit management.
- Strong skills in leadership, planning, and fiscal management.
- Proven ability to support boards or councils and navigate governance processes.
- Excellent communication, relationship-building, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365, Teams, Zoom/Skype, and other remote collaboration tools.
- Knowledge of the Alberta and Canadian post-secondary landscape.
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s licence required for travel to in-person events and meetings as required.
